Hypertension, or high blood pressure is a common but very serious medical
condition that many people suffer from, often without even knowing about it.
Since there are not always symptoms, it's a good idea to have your blood
pressure checked regularly to make sure it's within a normal range. At least
some of the causes of high blood pressure can be controlled or avoided, so we
will now examine a few of them.
One high blood pressure cause that you
can control is smoking. As if there weren't already enough reasons not to smoke,
smokers have a greater than normal risk of developing hypertension. High blood
pressure occurs when blood flow through the arteries is blocked, and smoking
contributes to this problem. As you might expect, someone who smokes frequently
is more likely to have high blood pressure than an occasional smoker. Yet
smoking at all, and even second hand smoke can pose risks as well. Studies
indicate, however, that if you quit smoking, you can improve your health and
lower your blood pressure, no matter how long you've been smoking.
Even
experts don't agree about the exact causes of high blood pressure, and very
often the cause can't be identified. Most cases of high blood pressure are
called essential hypertension, which means the exact cause cannot be
found.
While many factors, such as age, diet, smoking and stress can
contribute to it, even experts have not identified a specific cause in the
majority of cases. Since the causes are hard to pinpoint, you have to have your
blood pressure checked to know if it's high. Researchers are still trying to
figure out exactly what causes high blood pressure, but meanwhile you can still
take actions to lower your risks of hypertension or control it once it's been
diagnosed.
Don't let your sedentary lifestyle kill you, get up, get out
and get some exercise. The experts will tell you that more people have high
blood pressure because of the job they have combined with not enough exercise.
Getting a moderate amount of exercise into your routine may sound hard but it
really can help get your blood pressure under control. A lack of physical
activity in our young people is the greatest risk to our young people where
obesity and hypertension are concerned. Fortunately, this is one cause of high
blood pressure that's fairly easy to reverse, though it takes some effort to
change your habits.
Work with your doctor to find out may be causing
your high blood pressure if you have this problem, as there are many causes.
Knowing what caused your blood pressure can be a key in figuring out how to
control or even reverse it. You need to examine your lifestyle and medical
history even if some of the causes of high blood pressure mentioned above apply
to you because there are many more causes not mentioned here.
