A lot of people don抰 think that they need a vet to take care of their animals. Their rationalization is that animals are essentially creatures that can rely on their nature to get by. These are people who don抰 believe in spaying or neutering their animals, they don抰 get vaccines against rabies or other diseases, and they don抰 maintain them on a regular flea and/or tick regimen. Although it seems all you have to do is feed your dog or cat, it is imperative that you take care of them through veterinary services for your health and for the health of your pet.

Not only is it irresponsible when you don抰 bring in your animal for regular vaccination shots, it is illegal. Domestic animals that live in communities are required to have certain shots for them to be legal. This is for the health of your family and the health of the community. You could be fined or charged with reckless endangerment if your dog or cat gets a neighbor sick or hospitalized. If you cannot afford these vaccinations, there are programs for more affordable vaccinations in your area.

Pets, unless they are going to be bred, should also be spayed or neutered. This way no community animals end up getting pregnant or your pet ends up pregnant. It is very difficult to handle this if you are not a breeder and can be dangerous if you do not know, for example, how the two breeds will mix. If you have a female and male dog in your home and they are not fixed, they will try to breed. Even siblings from the same brood will attempt to breed. This causes devastating deformities in their children, many of which can never live to adulthood. Make sure all of your animals are fixed by a vet to avoid these problems.

Pets should also be on a regular flea and tick treatment, not only for them but also for you. Fleas can take over your house and affect your health. Ticks can carry diseases. Cats and dogs are sometimes very good at taking care of themselves with regular grooming, but when things get out of hand, it抯 not only their problem but your problem too. If you don抰 want to get the expensive medicine through your vet, you can also pick them up in a retail store or order by phone or online for a cheaper price.

Not taking care of your pets is irresponsible. Proper treatment not only makes sure that your pets are happy and healthy but also makes sure that you and other members of the community are safe. Next time you think you can skip out on an appointment, think again. Do you need a vet? Absolutely.
